When it comes to business awards, many owners and entrepreneurs hesitate to put themselves forward. Whether it’s self-doubt, time constraints, or simply not knowing where to start, there are plenty of reasons people talk themselves out of entering.
But here’s the thing—most of those reasons are myths! Let’s bust some common misconceptions and show you why entering the Wigan Business Awards 2025 could be one of the best decisions you make this year.
Myth 1: “Only Big Businesses Win”
💡 Reality: Small businesses, sole traders, and start-ups win awards all the time! In fact, many of our categories are specifically designed to celebrate businesses of all sizes, from micro-businesses to long-established companies. If you’re making an impact, you have a chance. Last year Chris Smith from CSC2 took home the Freelancer of the Year Award, and Amy’s Little Studio beat off some big competition to be crowned Creative & Digital Business of the Year.
Myth 2: “I Don’t Have Time to Enter”
💡 Reality: While running a business is demanding, completing an awards entry doesn’t have to be. Our process is straightforward, and we even run free workshops (like our upcoming session at Wigan Business Expo on Thursday 27th March) to help you craft a strong application. A small time investment now could lead to huge benefits for your business later! Plus, once it’s written, you could use this to enter other awards too. Plus, sometimes it’s really nice to look back and see just how far you’ve come.
Myth 3: “You Have to Know the Right People to Win”
💡 Reality: Absolutely not! The Wigan Business Awards are independently judged by a panel of industry experts. In 2024 we recrutied 54 judges to judge 96 finaist interviews. There’s no public vote (except for the People’s Choice Award), no popularity contest—just fair, professional judging based on merit. If your business stands out, it stands a chance!
Myth 4: “I Haven’t Been in Business Long Enough”
💡 Reality: If you’re making a difference, your business deserves to be recognised—no matter how new it is. That’s why we have categories like Best New Business to celebrate those making an impact in their early years. Just make sure you choose the best category to suit your business, no matter the size, industry or legnth of time you’ve been trading.
Myth 5: “Winning Won’t Really Benefit My Business”
💡 Reality: Winning (or even being shortlisted) can boost your credibility, visibility, and customer trust. Past winners have used their awards to attract new clients, gain media attention, and strengthen their reputation. Plus, it’s a great morale boost for your team! Imagine writing ‘Award Winning….’ on your website and socials. Has a nice ring to it doesn’t it?
